Episode 03: Life as an Olympian, Mom, & Entrepreneur | Lauren Bay-Regula

Lauren Bay-Regula is a mother of three, a business owner, and a two-time Olympian who is currently training for her third Olympic appearance on the Canadian softball team.

She and her husband, Dave Regula, have experienced the difficulty of maintaining your body, your mind, your business, and your family all at the same time. You don’t want any of those plates to drop, but it’s a struggle keeping them all in the air at the same time.

And things didn’t always go well. There were some dark years in there, and depression put up one hell of a fight. But because they had each other — and because they were willing to put aside their egos and ask for help — both Lauren and Dave are still spinning those plates and crushing every aspect of their lives.

We often put Olympic athletes up on a pedestal, like their lives are somehow different than ours. But Lauren reminds us that being an Olympian, being a parent, being a business owner — it’s all hard, it’s all worth doing, and we often don’t give ourselves enough credit for making it through some tough shit.

We Discuss:

  • 00:02:30 - The parents who taught Lauren that sports are play

  • 00:05:30 - Why “you want to be an athlete, you don’t want to be a softball player or basketball player,” and how parents are pushing their children to play sports in potentially unhealthy ways
